Case study: Efficiency and compliance in Biomass energy production
Gas Data is helping Scottish-based Biosus Energy Ltd manage a fruit-farm based biomass gasification system.
Biosus Energy specialises in the delivery and operation 100 kWe to 1 MWe biomass gasification systems and the company’s latest installation is a 90 kW electric and 220 kW thermal biomass plant using mini wood chip feedstock.
The farm is an energy intensive business and managing costs is extremely important in ensuring that it remains profitable. As you could imagine much of the energy consumption comes from fruit production, processing and packaging but there is a large resident workforce who need heating and lighting too.
The farm’s owners were keen to discuss new cost-saving ideas, according to Biosus Energy director Garth Way:
“Our experience of actually running biomass-based energy systems meant we could provide a solid business case for the investment plus a tried and tested, albeit innovative, technical solution.”
“The company’s ability to get the facility up and running in under 10 weeks appeared to ‘the icing on the cake’ to agree a deal.”
Biosus Energy has put in place a wood chip-based gasifier with Combined Heat and Power generation. Payback on the capital costs comes after around 3 years with a combination of RHI and ROC subsidies and reductions in grid-based energy consumption.
It is important to note that Biosus Energy’s participation didn’t stop after the plant was switched on. The company is responsible for the support, optimisation and service of the biomass gasifiers on an on-going basis and that’s where Gas Data comes in, as Garth Way explains:
“Information is key in operating the gasifier. We have to satisfy the regulators that we are delivering the volume and quality of gas expected, and ensure the optimal operation of the CHP engine.”
“A Click! System fixed analyser delivers what we need in terms of gas analysis and Gas Data have also combined this with accurate, easily serviced and calibrated flow metering capability.”
For Gas Data the development of the biomass sector has helped put the spotlight on the monitoring capability of its instruments. The company has developed a syngas module for the Click! System Fixed Analyser and a new flow meter solution to help comply with regulatory standards. These allow operators like Biosus Energy to meet with OFGEM fuel measurement and sampling (FMS) requirements and gain the necessary Renewables Obligation Certificates (ROCs).
Gas Data’s role, according to MD Chris Dakin, is to make volume and value calculations as easy as possible:
“We can provide a simple display of relevant GCV (Gross Calorific Value) and flow volume data to be added to the Renewables and CHP Register. It’s very accurate and little management time is needed for collection.”
Biosus Energy is now engaged with a variety of businesses and organisations who can take advantage of their biomass energy generation capability. Gas Data are looking forward to “going with the flow.”
