Odours in industrial applications can be caused by a number of gases. Most commonly, hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is the root cause of odours, particularly in industries such as wastewater treatment and biogas generation. It is essential to monitor H2S levels due its nature as an irritant and chemical asphyxiant. If levels of hydrogen sulphide remain unmonitored and isn’t controlled it can affect a worker’s ability to breath as the lungs absorb the gas. In more extreme circumstances where H2S levels are higher, it can begin to cause side effects including dizziness, nausea, and even death.
The legal occupational exposure limits for hydrogen sulphide are ten parts per million averaged over eight hours or fifteen parts per million over fifteen minutes – as determined by the Environmental
