Why monitor methane?
The primary reason to monitor and measure methane in industrial applications is to meet regulatory requirements. In addition to this, methane can also contaminate high purity gases used for medical or other industrial purposes.
Furthermore, while useful for some industrial applications, methane has number of harmful qualities for both people and the environment. If there is a methane leak in a confined space, an excessive accumulation can occur leading to methane poisoning in anyone with the space, which can be deadly. Additionally, methane is one of the key contributors to climate change with its global warming potential (GWP) believed to be 80 times greater than CO2 over a 20-year period.
Methane is also highly flammable creating a it a fire risk in many industrial and domestic applications. Due to the fact that it is also an odour and colourless gas, methane poses a significant threat to people, facilities, and the environment. Monitoring methane production in industrial applications can help to mitigate these risks and with the addition of the ability to detect leaks, you can also reduce the hazard risk of personnel working within confined spaces.
